Making it work with one window and one corner | Toronto family and birthday session

In advance of their session, this family sent me a few photos of their space to see what might work for their baby’s first birthday portraits. We decided on using one corner of their family room, which has a sofa and large window next to it. After the family portraits, we set up a white backdrop in the same space for baby’s cake smash. Here are a couple of photos that show the space, without any lighting or editing/retouching:

Because it was quite a dark area, I brought some artificial light (ie a speedlight/flash) and set it up on their deck just outside the window. Everything worked out perfectly!

Here are a few highlights from their session:

This is why I tell families not to worry about the layout or lighting in their home prior to our session together. As long as there are elements that they love (like the sofa and wall colour in this example), then we can make it work!
