Spring is almost here in Toronto! While we are all social distancing, your little one may have a birthday coming up and you may be unable to schedule a professional photography session for them. With the closure of essential services, you may not be able to order that beautiful cake that you envisioned for their day, and you most definitely will not be able to have that amazing party that you had been waiting to do to celebrate surviving this first year! (because let’s be real, a baby’s first birthday celebration is more for the parents – for SURVIVING the past 12 months!)
With that said, I think you will thank yourself one day for taking a bit of time to make some special portraits to celebrate this first birthday, even if you don’t have a fancy camera or special set up. Why? Because the important thing is to do something. Even if it’s just a few snaps on your phone, your child will LOVE being able to look back on these photos because they won’t have any memory of it. You’ll be able to show them the pictures when they’re older and tell stories about this time in all your lives. They’ll be so curious! You’ll be able to tell stories about how you were all home together during the pandemic and ow even though you couldn’t celebrate with loved ones in person, you still celebrated.
So if you’re now convinced, here are some fun ideas for you!
1) Set up a washable blanket on the grass and place a giant slice of watermelon on it. Let your little one explore and eat it while you quickly snap away! Watermelon is so fun – see the session below for some super cute watermelon smash pictures!
2) If you don’t have outdoor space, you can use a floor or high chair by a large window.
3) Looking for a fun alternative to cake? How about a giant pancake? Waffles? Donuts? Or a burger? Basically, anything that is not a choking hazard would work. Oh, and avoid anything with too much orange or red (e.g. tomato sauce, cheese). Those colours end up looking like vomit and/or blood in photos when babies get it all over themselves, eek!
When you’re done, send me a photo of how it all turned out, I’d love to see!
