Photography Tips |Before and After | Birthday Cake Smashes

Before and after of an image edited in Lightroom and Photoshop | Cake Smash behind the scenes | Toronto photographer Jessica Nip

I like to keep birthday cake smash sessions simple, clean, and bright. An all-white backdrop, a pretty cake, and a cute baby (or babies) are all that’s needed to make portraits of such an important milestone in a baby (and family’s) life. Pure, simple, and minimal trends.

This is typically how a birthday cake smash setup looks at my Toronto studio. Because this image had two children in it, I had to step farther back and include some of the surrounding background items, which is handy for this post showing how it looks behind the scenes! If I had stepped closer to try and capture JUST the kids and background, the kids would have been too close to the edges of the image. If you’ve been getting to know how I shoot by reading my blog this year, you’ll know that I prefer to shoot wider and give myself room to rotate and crop an image if needed.

Some adjustments I did in my editing software: cropped in closer, extended the white background to the edges of the image, removed the magenta tones by sliding my tint slider towards the greens, and increased the exposure.
