Photography Tips | Before and After | Intentionally underexpose images

Before and After photography editing tips by Jessica Nip Photography in Toronto, Canada | info@jessicanip.com

Today I’ll explain why I intentionally underexpose images sometimes.

It can be hard to achieve a bright portrait that still retains the details in the bright and white areas.

In the camera, one can make adjustments to the ISO, aperture, and shutter speed so that the image appears like the “After” image above. My worry about this method is that the tiny LCD screen on the back of the camera is not that accurate. It can look fantastic on the LCD screen, but when I open it up on a computer I’ll likely see that the image is overexposed, and all the bright white areas are just white blobs with no details in them (which can be awful when printing images).

My approach then is to intentionally underexpose for images that have a lot of white in them. Because I shoot in RAW, I know I’ll have plenty of leeway to edit the image using RAW processing software.
