Photography Tips | Backlight and colour temperature in outdoor photos

Welcome to another photography tips post! Today I’ll explore backlighting and colour temperature in outdoor photos.

I love shooting into the light. This means that the subjects are between me and the sun. Often, though, what happens when I shoot this way is that faces end up being dark. I could increase my exposure in the camera but that causes the background to become too bright sometimes. So I just use my favourite Lightroom slider – shadows – and increase them. I can either increase the shadows just on the people, or overall. In this example, I did an overall lightening of the image.

During a family session, my white balance settings (colour temperature) are set to Automatic. I have tried using Kelvin and custom settings, but I find that the conditions change so often that I forget to adjust them. I’d much rather set it and forget it. For this session, you can see that the white balance is very cool. The telltale sign is the dad’s shirt: it’s supposed to be white but it has a blue tint in the original photo. Even his grey pants look blue. To change this, I just adjust the temperature to a warmer one in Lightroom. I think the final white shirt looks great!
