They turned out so well I’m definitely doing this again! | Outdoor holiday sessions 2020

In the 8 years that I’ve been running annual holiday sessions, 2020 was the first year I’ve offered an outdoor option. I’ll be honest – I have never done them outdoors because Toronto weather is the MOST unpredictable in the fall and spring. There could be rain, hail, snow, heat…I really don’t need to invite that kind of anxiety into my life! I like the control and predictability of the studio environment. In the studio, my lights and props are set up in advance and I don’t need to have multiple back-up dates ready to go.

BUT.

After doing them this year, I am in LOVE. Why? Oh, so many reasons:

  1. Kids have space to run around. This just adds to the fun and keeps them in a good mood! I can ask them to “run to the tree all the way over there and back” so I can take a picture of their sibling or parents and they won’t have to just “sit there and wait for your turn”.
  2. I can create variety in a single spot just by changing where I stand.
  3. I get to use my favourite lens of all time (for the camera nerds, it’s the Canon 135mm/f2)
  4. Families can wait in their cars or take a walk until it’s their turn. Since the area is visible from the parking lot and walking path, there’s no risk of multiple families bumping into each other, or coming into close contact. This is comforting to know for COVID times.

One additional reason that I think families might like to choose the outdoor option (and continue to do so each year) is that if you choose not to use any of the holiday props or dress in holiday-themed clothing, these portraits on a natural backdrop are timeless and can be displayed all year long.

So if you are wondering if I’ll be doing these again next year, I would definitely love to! Stay tuned in late 2021!

Below are two sessions that show just how different a couple of weeks makes. The first family had their session during the first weekend of November, and the second family had their session 2 weeks later! What a change, and I love both looks equally!
