Toddlers, kids, children, little monsters…they come with many names, and I love them all. I posted on Instagram recently how a big part of my heart and passion is with children. I have known since I was 13 years old, when I got my first job as an assistant swim instructor, that I wanted to ALWAYS work with kids. Being around kids brought out this side of me that I didn’t know I had – loud, silly, funny, and totally UN-selfconscious. Over time, “working with or alongside kids” evolved into being a summer camp counsellor, Girl Guides leader, school tutor, elementary school teacher, and mother. Making the move to become a full-time photographer and enterpreneur, and leaving that traditional job title of “teacher” behind, I worried that this would all be a big mistake. I thought I’d miss the kids too much.
But the amazing thing about my job now is that I get to meet and be around a LOT of kids! I get to watch them grow from babyhood to toddlerhood. I get to watch them become big sisters and big brothers. I get to talk to hang out with them in their home and go on guided tours of their bedrooms and playrooms.
It’s pretty awesome.
So if you’re thinking of booking a session but you’re worried that your toddler or child isn’t ready because she’s scared of strangers, or she takes a while to warm up, or she doesn’t act herself when around new people, it’s okay. I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve. And I’m happy to just hang out and play trains if that’s what it takes to become friends with them.
Here’s a recent session with a toddler who has just become a big brother. I last photographed him when he was a newborn himself so it was so sweet to see him again.
