Almost every family that comes to me is looking for a great family portrait that they can hang on their walls, share with friends on social media, and eventually pass on to their children. People’s initial request is for that family portrait to be perfect – all eyes looking at the camera, all bodies looking straight and clothing unruffled, and of course, everyone smiling. And of course we try for that. But what happens more often than not is that parents are NOT picking that requested portrait to be printed. Or, a few years down the line, they find themselves drawn to those “other” family portraits that I’ve taken as more meaningful and representative of their family’s true likeness. The ones that show connection. The ones where parents are not looking at the camera but rather at their babies. The ones where their babies are smiling back at them, kissing them, or making a silly face. Ones like this one below, where mom and dad were relaxed and ready to have a ticklefest, sister was all for it, but big brother knew what was coming and just would. not. laugh. Nope, he was determined to be the mature one of the family and to keep calm!
